According to Deloitte Global, virtual reality (VR) will have its first billion dollar year in 2016, with about US$700 million in hardware sales, and the remainder from content. VR is likely to have multiple applications, both consumer and enterprise, in the longer term, but in 2016 Deloitte Global expects the vast majority of commercial activity to focus on videogames. They estimate sales of about 2.5 million VR headsets and 10 million game copies.
At Level Up 2016, DNA caught up with Mohd Hezri Amir Bin Abdul Latiff, MD, Hezmedia Interactive. His company is heavily involved in developing VR applications and arcade VR games.
Hezmedia Interactive is a creative multimedia and game development studio established in 2009. We have been creating compelling IPs, mobile games and apps for various clients, especially on Android, iOS and web-based platforms. During Level Up 2016, we are actually showcasing our first VR game called D.U.K.E: Dimension Ultimate Keeper. It is a 3D sirst person shooter game that uses HTC Vive.
With the rise of virtual reality technology over the past few years, we started to take an interest in the technology and have developed core games to understand how VR technology works. Now, we have the capability to develop content and solutions in VR and we believe the skills and experiences that we have gained are not only applicable to gaming, but also other areas such as training and simulation.
While we are still focusing on casual games, having VR content development as part of our service offerings strengthen our company’s position as the leading game developer that specialises in edutainment and gamification in the region.
For a startup game development company, it can be challenging to embark on VR development, especially if you have limited resources on budget and manpower. As the VR technology got more advanced, a lot of new tools, devices and best practices were introduced. Every couple of months, a new technology or device was launched by one of the major players in the VR industry and almost on a daily basis.
In order to always be relevant in the industry, it can be a full-time effort to catch up with the latest development, news and trends. VR technology comes in various type and forms, some are wireless and some are tethered. You might need to have enough capital to purchase and try out several VR equipment and devices, which can cost a few thousand dollars, especially for the high-end products like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
In terms of content development, it shouldn’t be a major issue if you are familiar with game development software like Unity and Unreal. However, from a game design perspective, the developer must realise the differences of UI and UX (User Interface and user Experience) when developing VR content as compared to developing normal games. In our case, we are fortunate to be funded by MDEC for our Research and Development on VR technologies. This helps a lot to overcome the initial obstacles faced by many newcomer in the industry.
In our case, we have no problem finding and recruiting a team to work on our VR project. In terms of art, there are many quality 3D designers and modeller to develop assets for our game. For the programming side, studios may find it a bit hard to recruit a good talent and I believe it happens not just in VR project development, but also in the game development industry as a whole.
To overcome this, we hire programmers with a strong Unity background and allow them to explore and learn how to develop VR games and content along the way. I would say, 70% of the knowledge in developing a standard game is still applicable when starting a VR development project, and the remaining 30% is to understand and implement different SDKs and APIs that comes with the technology used. As for designers, they might need to iterate UI/UX design to achieve better experiences in VR.
For Hezmedia, we take a long time to recruit people to be part of our development team. Most of our current staff graduated from local universities and possess relevant game development background. They know about job vacancies from our website and apply through Emails. Most of them also go through an internship process prior to getting hired.
To hire a local VR developer might a bit difficult, especially if the developer is a newcomer or they do not have the time to groom and train the talent like what we do. Nevertheless, talent can also be sourced from websites like Upwork and Freelancer.com where you might consider people from different parts of the world work together online.
Yes, we are using Unity for most of our projects including our first VR game, D.U.K.E: Dimension Ultimate keeper. There are other game engines available to develop VR content such as Unreal Engine. All have their own strengths and weaknesses.
For example, Unreal may have better graphics processing capabilities, but due to its steeper learning curve, finding talent might be a bit hard. As for Unity, it is a far more approachable game development tool and due to that, their user base is huge and finding talent is much easier.
We also utilise Unity’s huge Asset Store to acquire quality art assets like particle effects and sounds for our projects. Since it is much more effective in term of cost and time to work with Unity Engine, we decided to develop our project in Unity and have yet to try other game engine.
At the moment, we are focusing on developing more content for VR, especially for our own VR Arcade platform called ArenaVR. Along with our partner company, Flyx Technologies, we have created an advanced virtual reality platform in a form of an arcade booth.
The system doesn’t require any controller and is very simple to use. Player will need to enter the booth and wear VR head mounted display device to start their VR experience. They can roam or navigate in the vast virtual reality world just by using their body and hand gestures only. It is capable of solving the locomotion problem with recent VR technology.
The ArenaVR booth can offer a wide variety of games as well including multiplayer first person shooter, escape rooms, casual arcade games and many more, at a very reasonable price.
Players can also save their progress within their individual account and it will be stored in the cloud. The next time they come to play, they can load their progress and continue from where they stopped previously. This new model and new system will revolutionise arcade centers and develop a community of VR early adopters, gamers and enthusiasts under one roof.
Microsoft’s HoloLens can be one of the most advanced Mixed Reality devices that can drive the mass adoption of similar technology on a global scale. The technology is very useful and can be applied for day to day activities in the near future - just like how people use laptops nowadays.
Currently, due to its high price and also the small field of view, we might see restrained adoption. However, as the technology advances and the cost comes down, I would imagine that individual people would buy it for personal use. It could reach a point where it will be as revolutionary and disruptive as the smartphone. As for us, we already have plans to develop solutions using Microsoft HoloLens and are looking for partners to embrace the technology together.
Along with our partner, Flyx Technologies, we are now at the stage of talking to potential partners, distributors and gathering valuable input and feedback on how to commercialise our ArenaVR arcade platform for theme parks, amusement/srcade centres and arcade distributors in Asian region.
We are also looking for potential investors for our seed stage funding and several other key partners to scale up the commercialisation activities once our product is accepted by arcade operators. Hezmedia Interactive will be handling the software and content and we plan to develop up to 5 more VR games in different genres over the next 2 years.
By the year 2018, we might reach a stage whereby we are ready to expand to other regions beyond Asia and we will be looking for the next stage of funding.

Kuala Lumpur: Thursday, 22nd May 2015 – A collaboration between Hezmedia Interactive Sdn. Bhd. &Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS proven to be fruitful as they have won Silver Medal Award for the VRtualize : Road Safety Project during the 26th International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
VRtualize Road Safety is a project that uses Oculus Rift technology to simulate road crossing activities, designed for young children. The product is believed to be able to provide an relatively low cost and highly effective training to teach pedestrian on how to cross the roads safely. The project was pioneered by Hezmedia team, and supported by Dr Wan Fatimah from UTP to be further developed.
While the team is continuously busy experimenting with various VR devices and develop more VR applications and contents, our Project Leader, Mr, Hezri Amir managed to arrange a meeting with the director of Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya (JKJR) Ipoh, Pn. Laila Mazwin to explore possible implementation to the current Road Safety syllabus at schools. During the two hours meeting and VRtualize Road Satety demonstration, JKJR state their interest to collaborate with us, at least at several primary schools and kindergarten around Perak. It is hoped that through this initiative, VRtualize: Road Safety program will have a significant impact to the road user in Malaysia and ultimately reduce the number of road accident statistic in the future.
As a newcomer to the latest Oculus Rift VR technology development, in line with our aspiration to spearhead and revolutionize digital learning, Hezmedia is proud to present its new venture : VRtualize!
Hezri, Zainal and Tarmizi formed the team to explore the opportunity of applying Virtual Reality contents for educational purposes, especially in the field of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE). The target audience would be the worker or the HSE officer who work in a high risk industries such as Oil & Gas, Construction & Manufacturing sector.
The VRtualize technology is believed to be able to reduced the time required for conventional HSE training down from days to hours only, and significantly reduce the travelling, accommodation & consultation cost that normally associated with normal training programmes.
In a nutshell, our idea is to create a highly immersive 3D virtual simulation/training using a game development tool, which is Unity3D. Our target audience, the workers would feel like they are in the intended environment (even though they are at home for example) and from there, we can test/educate the person with different potential scenarios like fire breakout, emergency situations, flash floods and others. Their actions in the realistic 3D world then will be recorded and analysed, or we can give immediate feedback/lessons in the simulation itself.
VRtualize team will be competing in SUPERB 2014 Fund programme and are pretty busy preparing presentations & prototypes as we were shortlisted to take part in the semi-final for the competition. It is hoped that the technology that we develop will be able to improve HSE trainings for medium & big corporations around the world.

Zainal is an experienced indie game developer bringing more than 5 years of experience in casual, racing, endless runner, and many other genres. His passion in games (especially in 3D) have made him one of the most respected indie game developer as he alones have published more than 5 game titles in the past few years.
He further his study at Universiti Putra Malaysia to pursue his master in Computer Science while at the same time, works at Telekom Malaysia as Network Developer. He owns Adik Pintar Studio and work on his project as a part time or hobby activities.
After few months of collaboration with him, he is now part of Hezmedia’s Core Team members. With his skills and abilities compliment our current strength and competencies, the sky is the limit for Hezmedia Interactive Sdn Bhd and we promised to bring only quality games to you!
We are pleased to annouce Math Quest has won GOLD AWARD in the 27th Annual Invention & New Product Invention at Monroeville Convention Centre, Pennsylvania, USA.
The international exhibition received participation all around the world with more than 300 inventions held between 13th – 15th June 2012.
Represented by Dr Wan Fatimah, this has marked another proud accomplishment to Math Quest product among other numerous achievement locally and internationally.
24th April 2012 mark a historical moment for Hezmedia Interactive when we officially collaborate with PT Dante Pariwara Nusantara and PT Distribusi Media Teknologi by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta.
The event witnessed by Mr Nadzri Shamsudin – Trade Commissioner, MATRADE Jakarta, Indonesia. Mr Dinesh Arnold Nair – Director, INFOTECH MDEC Malaysia and Mdm Azlina Azman – Deputy Director, Head of CIO Prime Minister’s Department Malaysia while receiving warm applaud by the rest of Malaysian and Indonesian delegates.
The collaboration with PT Dante Pariwara Nusantara intend to commercialise and monetize Math Quest® games applications and components including the comic strips, mini-games installation, animation and bedtime stories in the South East Asia region, valued at RM1.5 Million within a year. It also comprise of developing and managing mobile application platform on Blakberry, Android, iOs, Java and Window Mobile for Math Quest games and components.
“Our vision is that Hezmedia will bring Math Quest® to the mobile and internet platform with a wide range of diverse components. On the 2011, Hezmedia Interactive Sdn Bhd will participate in the MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific ICT Awards (MSC Malaysia APICTA) and Intellectual Property Creators Challenge (IPCC) 2011.
MSC Malaysia APICTA becomes a platform for the individuals and company to stimulate creativity, innovation and excellence in ICT in Malaysia. We will participate in two categories which is ‘Best of Start-up Companies’ and ‘Best of e-Learning’ categories. Our main product is Math Quest and now can be played online.
MSC Malaysia Intellectual Property Creators Challenge (IPCC) is targeted to discover and enhance the capability of local talents in terms of the development of new intellectual property. There will be three categories and we will take part in casual games competition. It focuses on games design especially in terms of innovative gameplay, art, and narrative idea to the assessment panel. The theme for this competition is “Malaysiana” which incorporate Malaysian stories. Our team is developing a fun and interactive game named “Ah Long Attack”. This game is available in iPod and PC platforms.
Permulaan Hezmedia adalah sama sahaja seperti pembangun game indie yang lain. Bermula dari terdetiknya idea untuk mencipta game sendiri dan bertemankan beberapa orang rakan yang mempunyai minat yang sama, kami telah membangunkan prototaip game pertama kami yang berjudul Math Quest sejak dari Universiti lagi. Walaupun kami tiada pengalaman langsung dalam pembikinan permainan komputer pada masa itu, berkat kesungguhan dan keazaman kami, akhirnya kami mampu menguasai beberapa perisian penting untuk pembinaan perisian permainan seperti Flash dan Photoshop sekaligus membolehkan kami menghasilkan prototaip permainan pertama kami. Tidak lama kemudian, selesai sahaja tahun akhir kami di universiti, iaitu Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, saya dan rakan saya telah memohon geran MDEC iaitu Pre Seed Grant yang berjumlah RM 150,000. Alhamdulillah kami dianugerahkan geran tersebut dan memulakan perjalan usahawan tekno dengan menubuhkan syarikat HEZMEDIA INTERACTIVE SDN BHD. Sepanjang 3 tahun kami beroperasi, kami telah banyak menghasilkan pelbagai jenis kandungan multimedia dan membina aplikasi permainan komputer bukan sahaja untuk laman web, malah kami juga turut membangunkan aplikasi untuk permainan facebook, telefon pintar, tablet dan sebagainya.
Pertama sekali, saya yang sememangnya seorang peminat permainan komputer sejak kecil dan menanam niat untuk menceburi bidang ini sebagai kerjaya idaman saya. Dalam tempoh 6 bulan menjadi pekerja praktikal di sebuah syarikat kreatif tempatan, Content Capital Sdn Bhd, saya telah menggunakan sepenuhnya peluang tersebut untuk mendalami bidang kandungan kreatif dan menggarap seberapa banyak ilmu untuk saya manfaatkan kelak. Dari situ, saya dapat lihat peluang kerjaya dalam industri kreatif adalah cukup cerah, ditambah pula dengan peluang-peluang dan insentif yang diberikan oleh agensi-agensi kerajaan seperti MDEC dan CRADLE yang saya kira sangat-sangat menarik. Saya berasa cukup bertuah kerana persediaan yang telah kami lakukan, dan peluang yang muncul pada masa itu sangat bersesuaian dan kami tidak melengah-lengahkan masa untuk mengambil peluang yang ada.
Tahun 2012 merupakan tahun yang cukup bermakna bagi saya. Sungguhpun liku-liku keusahawanan tetap ada, namun saya telah berjaya merealisasikan beberapa impian saya. Pertama sekali, syarikat kami telah mampu keluar daripada inkubator start-up dan kini mempunyai pejabat sendiri di Bandar Sunway bagi menampung jumlah pekerja kami yang semakin meningkat. Ia sememangnya impian saya untuk mempunyai studio sendiri dan alhamdulillah kini tercapai. Tahun ini juga tahun yang cukup bertuah bagi Hezmedia kerana telah berjaya membuktikan pencapaian dalam 2 konvensyen antarabangsa dimana produk kami iaitu Math Quest dianugerahkan pingat emas dalam International New Product Exposition, INPEX 2012 di USA dan International Technology Expo, ITEX di Kuala Lumpur. Saya berasa cukup bangga kerana ini membuktikan pencapaian anak Malaysia juga tidak kalah dengan hasil ciptaan produk-produk luar negara selain beroleh pengiktirafan diperingkat antarabangsa. Sebagai syarikat yang ingin menempa nama di persada dunia, saya semestinya perlu sentiasa menanda aras pertumbuhan syarikat saya dengan perkembangan dunia. Tahun 2012, saya berkesempatan untuk meninjau peluang perniagaan di luar negara, iaitu Indonesia dan Iran. Selain dari menimba pengalaman melihat perbezaan budaya dan cara niaga, Hezmedia juga telah mengikat perjanjian dengan beberapa syarikat di sana sebagai rakan niaga bagi mengembangkan lagi jenama produk keluar negara.
Seperti mana-mana perniagaan pun, Hezmedia tidak lari daripada menempuhi pelbagai cabaran dan kami sememangnya pernah beberapa kali melalui saat-saat getir dalam meneruskan perniagaan kami. Namun begitu, pada saya cabaran yang paling hebat pernah saya alami adalah sewaktu sebilangan besar pekerja syarikat menyuarakan hasrat untuk meninggalkan syarikat gara-gara telah sekian lama ber ‘bootstrapping’ atau dengan kata lain ‘mengikat perut’. Dengan berat hati kami terpaksa melepaskan mereka dan bermula semula dari bawah bersama 2 orang lagi rakan seperjuangan yang rapat. Saya percaya setiap yang berlaku ada hikmahnya dan perlahan-lahan kami mengatur langkah dan akhirnya berjaya membangunkan semula syarikat dengan lebih berstrategi, tersusun dan berdaya saing. Alhamdulillah segala yang berlaku mematangkan kami dan ditambah lagi dengan nasihat-nasihat yang berterusan dari mentor perniagaan kami dibawah payung Futurist Foundation, kami yakin masa depan Hezmedia akan semakin kukuh dan utuh dari masa ke semasa.
Syarikat kami bukan sahaja fokus kepada penjualan produk yang kami bangunkan sendiri malah kami juga menyediakan perkhidmatan pembinaan aplikasi atau permainan komputer untuk pihak luar. Sebagai satu-satunya syarikat Bumiputera yang menjurus kepada pembinaan permainan komputer berunsur pendidikan, kami mendapat sambutan yang menggalakkan daripada beberapa agensi kerajaan dan swasta dari dalam dan luar negara. Antara pelanggan yang boleh kami kongsikan adalah seperti NSTP dan UTP dari sektor pendidikan dan juga RHB dari sektor perbankan. Melihatkan trend semasa dimana semakin ramai pihak yang menyedari potensi, kekuatan dan keberkesanan permainan komputer dalam manjana trafik, manarik minat pelanggan mahupun sebagai cara pembelajaran yang tidak membosankan, kami menjangkakan Tahun 2013 memperlihatkan peluang perniagaan yang lebih cerah terutamanya kepada pemacu-pemacu industri pembangunan aplikasi dan permainan digital.
Hezmedia sememangnya ingin menjadi peneraju kepada kandungan-kandungan kreatif yang interaktif, menyeronokkan dan ilmiah. Bermula dengan Produk sulung kami iaitu Math Quest, kami beroleh pengalaman yang cukup berharga bukan sahaja dari proses pembikinan kandungan tersebut malahan dalam memahami pasaran Malaysia dan luar negara. Kami cukup yakin dalam potensi perniagaan yang kami ceburi dan telah pun merangka pembikinan judul-judul kami yang akan datang seperti StarQuest (Pembelajaran Sains Interaktif) dan The Voyager (Pengembaraan sejarah tamadun silam). Namun sehingga pertengahan tahun ini, kami akan tetap fokus kepada pembikinan 6 lagi siri permainan Math Quest yang mempunyai 7 siri secara keseluruhannya dan akan menemui pengguna platform mudah alih seperi telefon pintar dan tablet tidak lama lagi.
Pada awalnya, syarikat kami melalui fasa Penyelidikan dan Pembangunan, jadi kami memilih strategi Kualiti diutamakan dari Kuantiti dimana kami sangat-sangat teliti dalam proses pemilihan pekerja kami yang secara puratanya tidak pernah melebihi 10 orang pekerja tetap. Tenaga kerja kami yang selebihnya adalah terdiri daripada pekerja separuh masa dan freelancer luar, yang hasil kerjanya diyakini dan hanya akan terlibat secara langsung sekiranya khidmat mereka diperlukan dari masa ke semasa. Formasi ini membolehkan kami lebih fleksibel dan tangkas dalam menyesuaikan diri dalam bidang IT yang sentiasa berubah-ubah dan amat pantas perkembangannya. Kini, dengan produk kami yang sedia untuk dikomersilkan, kami menjangkakan pertambahan tenaga kerja yang signifikan dengan mewujudkan pasukan jualan dan pemasaran profesional kami sendiri yang bertanggungjawab memacu pertumbuhan keuntungan syarikat melalui kaedah jualan fizikal dan secara atas talian.
Berdasarkan kajian-kajian yang saya pernah baca dan dalami sebelum ini, sememangnya permainan dalam pembelajaran merupakan suatu topik yang cukup penting dan sudah sekian lama dibincangkan di peringkat global. Ramai tokoh pemikir, para pengkaji dan pakar-pakar psikologi mengakui bahawa permainan mampu merangsang minda seseorang pelajar, meningkatkan motivasi untuk menerokai ilmu, meningkatkan keupayaan motor dan kemahiran kognitif dan sebagainya. Dan banyak negara-negara luar seperti US, Eropah malah Singapura juga sudah berada di tahap implementasi kaedah permainan di dalam bilik darjah di sekolah-sekolah terpilih, dan keberkesanannya sering dijadikan artikel di jurnal-jurnal penyelidikan serata dunia. Namun Malaysia masih diperingkat awal dalam penggunaan permainan didalam pembelajaran dan tidak dianggap sesuatu yang diutamakan. Saya percaya suatu masa nanti konsep bermain sambil belajar akan diterapkan di bilik darjah secara menyeluruh dan Malaysia mampu menjadi pemacu dalam usaha ini sekiranya ramai pihak bekerjasama dan mendapat sokongan penuh dari pihak kerajaan terutamanya Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia.
Dalam masa 5 tahun, saya ingin melihat syarikat yang kami tubuhkan ini bersaing diperingkat antarabangsa setaraf dengan pelopor-pelopor industri permainan digital yang popular seperti Glu, Zynga, Chillingo dan sebagainya. Hezmedia mempunyai aspirasi untuk menjadi peneraju dan perintis kepada kaedah pembelajaran melalui permainan digital di Malaysia dan kami harapkan agar ekosistem pendidikan negara akan lebih terbuka dan lebih bekerjasama untuk merealisasikan visi masa depan ini. Dalam 5 tahun, kami jangkakan Hezmedia akan turut melebarkan sayap ke bidang-bidang yang lain dengan menubuhkan anak-anak syarikat di bidang IT, Animasi, Penerbitan dan sebagainya. Ini membolehkan syarikat kami menyediakan perkhidmatan sehenti dalam industi multimedia kreatif dan media digital.
Industri permainan video/komputer kini merupakan antara industri yang terbesar di dunia dengan nilai pasaran mencecah USD65 Billion dan terus meningkat. Jadi tidak hairanlah banyak negara yang meletakkan Industri ini sebagai salah satu pemacu pendapatan negara, sebagai contoh Finland yang merupakan negara lahirnya Angry Bird menjana sebanyak USD 250 Million tahun 2012 dari sektor ini. Kita dapat lihat Malaysia juga telah mengorak langkah kearah memantapkan perkembangan industri kreatif sebagai Pelan Ekonomi Baru. Saya tidak menyangkal bahawa Malaysia juga berpotensi menjadi seperti negara-negara berikut dengan adanya sokongan kerajaan, penyediaan infrastruktur, insentif-insentif dan mewujudkan rangkaian ekosistem serantau. Namun begitu, kejayaan satu-satu syarikat itu sebenarnya terletak pada pasukan pengurusan syarikat itu sendiri yang harus mempunyai idea-idea unik, kreatif dan berdaya saing. Jadi, samada di Malaysia atau di mana sahaja pun industri game pasti menjanjikan potensi pertumbuhan yang cukup cerah kepada sesiapa sahaja yang bersungguh-sungguh menceburi bidang ini.

During the event, Hezmedia Interactive also was on among 100 exhibitors participating in D.A.R.E BizStart Showcase 2011 at Sunway Convention Centre on the 28th and 29th September 2011. The event aims to maximize business potential, by connecting opportunities, networks and resources to accelerate business development.The organizer, MAD Incubator claim that it is the biggest entrepreneur showcase in Malaysia.
